Building Bridges

0%

Our mission is to be a public media organization that truly represents the communities we serve. That’s a sentiment aptly summed up by our new tagline: “What matters to you.”

In 2022, what mattered most was reconnecting—in person and across platforms—through programming and services that found new ways to build a bridge to our audiences, wherever they are. We strived to innovate, reveal and listen and expand public media so that it is even more responsive. To you.

At the end of the year, GBH welcomed me (Susan Goldberg) as president and CEO, succeeding Jon Abbott. Jon’s 15-year tenure fueled GBH’s expansion beyond broadcast to become a digital-first, multiplatform media service. He leaves a remarkable legacy of contributions and accomplishments, from facilitating the move into our state-of-the-art Guest Street headquarters and launching GBH 89.7 as a local, 24/7 news service, to establishing PBS LearningMedia as the go-to resource for our nation’s educators and completing a record-breaking $215 million capital campaign. Jon’s work gives us a deep foundation to build on, and we are deeply grateful for his years of service to GBH.

In this transition, we’ve rededicated ourselves to providing programs and services that inform, illuminate and inspire.  As you’ll see in this report, GBH continues to create ground-breaking children’s media and education, engaging cultural programming, and award-winning journalism that ranges from breaking news and investigations to science, history and arts.

A key aspect of our work is to build structural inclusion into GBH’s policies, programs and culture, with concrete steps that address issues of diversity, equity and accessibility, both behind the camera and in front of it.

A recent survey found that GBH is #1 in trust in the Boston media market. PBS also remains the most trusted source for news and public affairs programming, outranking ABC, CBS, NBC and MSNBC, CNN and Fox News. We are dedicated to earning that trust—now and into the future. At the heart of all we do is creating programming and resources that are credible, high-quality and reflect the range of diverse voices that make up our community.

One thing we know is that storytelling and solutions-oriented journalism—which helps people see positive actions as opposed to only pointing out problems—keeps readers, listeners and viewers engaged, no matter what the topic. For example, GBH has an important role to play in driving thoughtful discourse on such issues as climate change. For almost 40 years, GBH has told stories related to the environment, whether about environmental justice, conservation or, more recently, the global climate crisis. Our growing portfolio, including news, programming, vital STEM information, educational resources and events, helps illuminate both the profound challenges and gives us the tools to act as caretakers of our planet.

Together with our communities and audiences, we will build bridges that connect people with ideas, reveal fresh perspectives, provide greater insight and endeavor to secure closer bonds among all of us. We look forward to crossing that bridge with you.

Journalism

GBH News delivered live and streamed coverage of news and analysis, events and podcasts, providing context and unbiased reporting to audiences across the region and country. Continuing its digital expansion, GBH journalism attracted broader audiences on such platforms as YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram and Twitter. A reimagined Morning Edition debuted with co-hosts Paris Alston and Jeremy Siegel. Beyond broadcast, the co-hosts engaged with audiences on social media with a new weekly, newsletter The Wake Up, FRONTLINE delivered hard-hitting investigative journalism, including Lies, Politics and Democracy, which premiered ahead of the 2022 midterms, examining how officials fed the public lies about the 2020 presidential election and embraced rhetoric that led to political violence. In the three-part documentary series The Power of Big Oil, FRONTLINE explored how the oil industry was researching climate change as early as the 1970s but attempted to cast doubt on the science and exerted influence over public perception and policy.

Science

NOVA is helping to reshape the science media landscape, making science stories more inclusive and accessible to all. This year, Krystnell Storr joined NOVA as its first-ever science and equity editor, developing and editing content at all stages of production, with a focus on cultural and historical accuracy, diversity of stories and scientists and the inclusion of the perspectives of historically excluded groups most affected by the science that NOVA covers. NOVA delivered on its commitment to building widespread engagement with science by demonstrating how the scientific process works and how powerful it can be in revealing and transforming our world. Ultimate Space Telescope followed the ups and downs of the complex mission of NASA’s revolutionary James Webb Space telescope, adding new content to a NOVA premiere as the telescope delivered its very first images. The film reached more than 2.7 million broadcast viewers and garnered 3.4 million viewers on YouTube. With comprehensive coverage across all its social media platforms in the first three days that the telescope was breaking news, NOVA’s content earned 3.5 million impressions and 294,000 engagements. The NOVA YouTube channel earned over 33 million video views in 2022—an increase of 125% over the previous year. On social media, NOVA earned over 68 million video views—up 93% from last year, with nearly 99% coming came from Facebook. Our extensive press coverage earned over 7 billion total impressions.

Children's Media & Education

GBH Kids continued to revolutionize media, using the power of digital platforms to extend and deepen the educational impact of its content. Molly of Denali, the George Foster Peabody Award-winning show and the first nationally distributed children's program to feature Alaska Native lead characters, continued to innovate. The third season of Molly of Denali launched in November along with a new series of shorts and a digital game both entitled “The Big Gathering.” “Molly of Denali: An Alaskan Adventure,” an interactive traveling museum exhibit, opened with a life-size replica of the fictional village of Qyah. The program was nominated for Children’s & Family Emmy® Awards in two categories: outstanding preschool animated series and outstanding writing for a preschool animated program. Arthur, which celebrated its 25th and final season, launched a new chapter. The  extensive library of more than 250 Arthur episodes continues to air on PBSKids. The Arthur TikTok channel and the “The Arthur Podcast” launched, giving audiences new ways to experience their favorite, iconic episodes. High School Quiz Show completed Season 13 using an innovative hybrid production model, with North Quincy High School winning the championship, besting 16 other state teams. GBH Education continued to expand its offerings to the nation’s schoolchildren, through PBS LearningMedia and varied informal resources for out of school learning. GBH’s Youth Media continued to produce, champion and support content and initiatives aimed at supporting and highlighting public media’s “missing middle”— tweens, teens and young adults who are essential to public media’s sustainability and future.

History, Arts & Culture

GBH opened up the worlds of music, drama, history and cultural arts through programming, podcasts, events and digital resources. The reach and scope of these offerings attest to the enduring value and power of art to connect us, reveal new worlds and find new links to our past and future. MASTERPIECE premiered Season Two of All Creatures Great and Small. GBH WORLD’s America ReFramed celebrated 10 years delivering documentary series to attract a younger, more diverse audience by sharing multicultural stories from new makers. Fannie Lou Hamer’s America: An America Reframed Special was co-produced with the subject’s great niece and innovative for using only the civil rights activist’s own voice in the narration. It kicked off the 10th season and won GBH WORLD’s first-ever IDA Documentary Award. America ReFramed has presented more than 170 multicultural stories and more than 370 filmmakers (more than half are female and one third are people of color) who reflect the everyday world we share. ANTIQUES ROADSHOW, the most-watched ongoing PBS series, completed its 26th broadcast season and received its 20th nomination for a Primetime Emmy® Award.
